NMBA Registration Pathways for Overseas Nurses

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) offers two registration pathways for internationally qualified nurses. Stream A applies to nurses trained in countries with healthcare systems comparable to Australia, such as the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Singapore. These applicants may not require additional exams but must meet English proficiency and identity checks.

Stream B is for nurses from other countries, including India, the Philippines, and Nigeria. They must complete the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA), which includes the NCLEX-RN (theory) and OSCE (clinical skills). Both pathways ensure nurses meet Australian standards for safe and effective practice.

The new standard builds upon existing pathways to simplify the assessment and registration process in 6 months  for eligible Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (IQRNs) who have already registered and practised in a country recognized by the NMBA as having comparable nursing standards.This streamlined approach will greatly reduce both the time and complexity involved for eligible candidates seeking to work as nurses in Australia. Currently, the application process — which may include assessments — typically takes between 9 and 12 months in total.
